Clinical Application: Alkaline phosphatase is mainly present in bone, liver, kidney, placenta and lung. Increases in Alk Phos may be due to increased bone metabolism; primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism; pagets disease' carcinoma metastatic to bone. Hepatobiliary diseases involving cholestasis, inflammation, cirrhosis increase alk phos activity. Also renal failure and complications of pregnancy can cause elevations in alk phos
