Acid fast bacteria stain
Cultures positive for acid fast bacteria are referred to ARUP Laboratory for identification and susceptibility testing when applicable.

|Sample Type:||Lower Respiratory specimens|
|Minimum Volume:||5-10 mL|
|Special Collection Instructions:||Sputum or Tracheal aspirate - Early morning specimen. Collect specimen on 3 consecutive days early morning as soon as patient awakens. Volume should be 5-10 mL obtained from deep cough (not spit) and placed in sterile container.|
|Specimen Information:||This test should be ordered on patients with Cystic fibrosis only and only on Respiratory specimens.|
|Specimen Transport:||Deliver sample to lab immediately.|
|Causes for Rejection:||Specimens collected on swabs are not acceptable and will be rejected without prior approval of the Microbiology Medical Director or clinical pathologist on call.|
|Testing Frequency:||Specimens inoculated M-TH 0700-1000, Friday 0700-1100.|
AFB stains read M-F 0700 - 1530.
Cultures read daily M-F. Negative reports updated weekly on Tuesday.
|Expected Turn Around Time:||Negative cultures - 42-49 days.|
|Reference Ranges:||Culture - No Acid Fast Bacilli Isolated|
Stain - No Acid Fast Bacilli Seen.
